Cutting 250 calories a day and exercising helps prevent
heart disease, study finds
A balanced diet and physical exercise are the main pillars
for maintaining weight and improving heart health. And, contrary to what many
think, you don't have to go far to stay healthy and prevent cardiovascular
disease. A study published in the medical journal Circulation pointed out, for
example, that cutting just 250 calories a day from the diet and practicing
moderate activity for 30 minutes just four times a week is already able to
significantly improve aortic stiffness in people with obesity.
The study included 160 sedentary and obese adults aged
between 65 and 79 years. They were divided into three groups: exercise without
changes in diet; physical activity with a reduction of 250 calories per day in
the diet; and performing exercises with caloric restriction of approximately
600 calories per day.
However, only the group that underwent moderate calorie restriction showed a significant improvement in aortic stiffness. “Previous studies had already shown that weight loss results in metabolic improvements that reduce the effort of the heart, lower blood pressure and, consequently, improve the health of the aorta. So, since both calorie-restricted groups lost weight similarly, it would be expected that the reduction in aortic stiffness would also be similar. Which did not happen, since the group that restricted calories moderately showed better results”, says Juliano.
The specialist explains that the hypothesis raised by the researchers for this fact is that an intense restriction of calories and, consequently, a more prolonged fasting, results in a state of hunger. With that, there is an increase in the levels of stress hormones, which can accelerate the hardening of the arteries.
